About Cockapoos

Cockapoos are absolutely sweethearts! Not only are they cute, but they are kind, easily trained, and hypoallergenic. But, as always, there are things to watch out for, but that doesn't mean there aren't pluses!

Temperament

Cockapoos are kind and good family pets. They love people, and inherit brains from both of their parent breeds (Poodles are considered to be one of the smartest dogs). They can be trained easily, but shouldn't be expected to learn everything immediately; They are just like every dog. Some may be too submissive, and others can be attached mainly to only one family member (Though even when this happens, they still love everyone!).

Every dog is different, but generally cockapoos are great dogs!

Appearance

Cockapoos inherit a hypoallergenic (meaning they have hair instead of fur. They don't shed, and they are better for people with minor allergies associated with dog dander and fur.) coat from poodles, as well as a sometimes curly coat. Sometimes they get a straighter coat like a cocker. As well as this, they come in nearly every color: buffs, roans, grays, phantoms, parti-colors, blacks, reds, whites. You may even get an apricot one!
Silky ears (Like Rosy's) are inherited from cockers, though not all cockapoos have them. Most have black noses, though you may occasionally find one with a liver nose. Eyes are usually brown, but blues are existent.
A toy cockapoo will weight 12 pounds or less. A miniature cockapoo weighs 13 to 19 pounds, and a standard weighs 20 or more pounds. Cockapoos are not necessarily the size of their poodle parents. Since Cockers weigh 27+ pounds, their weight also effects whether a cockapoo will be toy, miniature, or standard.

Ancestry

Cockapoos are mixed breeds, so they are not accepted for shows. If you want a show dog, cockapoos are not the breeds for you. A mix between a cocker and poodle, cockapoos inherit traits from this. A cockapoo that is the descendant of pure poodle and pure cocker is a F1. A cockapoo that is the offspring of a cockapoo and another cockapoo is a F2. If a F2 has puppies with another cockapoo, it is a F3, and so on. If a cockapoo has offspring with a poodle or cocker, its puppies become F1B. If the cockapoo is to become a breed, litters must go up to F7 with seperate breeders for each individual dog.

Additional Things

Cockapoos, if you want a full out, luxurious coat, you will need to brush your cockapoo everyday. If not, you can shave it once every three weeks.

They need a walk each day. Toys need less than miniatures and standards. Feel free to do agility, running, and even swimming. If you chose to have your dog swim, remember to always stay in the pool with the dog. As well as physical exercise, cockapoos need mental exercise each day.

  2. thinking of getting a cockapoo, but my last dog (another breed) had THE WORST case of submissive urination. is this common in cockapoos? and what kind of dog should i look for for the best case scenario (esp. in this regard)? f1, f2? any help of suggestions to picking out one would be appreciated.

  3. Not sure when this was written we have a Cockerpoo she is mine but adores my husband she follows him all the time. No problems with urinating she goes out about 5 times a day, at the same time not because we insist she knows the time and gently reminds you to take to the yard. She is exceptioally intelligent and was easy to train I should get one a Bitch is easier to train so I was told.
